The board

Wataku is played on the 81 intersections of a 9×9 grid. Pieces stand on points, not squares.

The armies

Each army has two Kings, a Queen, two Rooks, two Bishops, two Knights, four Pawns and four Turtles.

How a game starts

There is no setup. Both armies begin in a predefined formation, already at War, and White moves first. The pieces not in the formation wait in reserve; on your turn you either move one piece or deploy one from reserve.

How you win

Checkmate either enemy King — one is enough, and the mated King stays on the board. Your two Kings may stand together or apart: each keeps the friendly pieces linked to it active.
